For Rent: Manhattan's Highest Penthouses


In a bid to push the luxury apartment market ever higher, developer Forest City Ratner plans to rent penthouse units in the city's tallest residential building. The price? $60,000 per month.

Rentals Reach $60,000 a Month for Penthouses in Gehry Tower Downtown.

At the tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere, the developers are gambling that wealthy New Yorkers will pay dearly for a trophy apartment with sweeping views—even if it is only on loan.

In the next six to eight weeks, the three penthouses at New York by Gehry, a Manhattan rental tower twisting 76 stories into the sky, will hit the market at a price that would make most apartment-hunters blanch: $40,000 to $60,000 a month.

At that rate, a year's rent could easily cover a down payment on almost any luxury condo unit in the city. So it remains to be seen if affluent New Yorkers will spend that kind of money to borrow a view—even one that is 850 feet above Lower Manhattan, glances off the roof of the Woolworth Building, spans all three bridges and stretches out past Brooklyn to the Atlantic Ocean.
